The Purpose of Christ’s Coming By Cannon Ekenedrichukwu Eze
“The reason the son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” 1st John 3:8b
In creation, God made everything good; including man. Man in particular was made in God’s own image (Gen. 1:27). God placed man in a comfort zone; Garden of Edem where God intended to have constant and continued communion with man. In the Garden, God charged man saying, “you are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die’ (Gen. 2:16-17).
Unfortunately, man was unable to keep faith with this instruction. Man disobeyed and this brought upon man both spiritual and physical death.
God never relented since the fall of man in trying to redeem him hence our text, “the reason the son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil”. 1 Jn 3:8b. Jesus Himself knew the purpose of His coming and declared in Jn 12:27 thus, “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name! The reason Jesus came is because of you and I.
Jesus Christ appeared to save man from the bondage of sin due to his disobedience. Despite what Jesus has done to redeem man, many people are still under the slavery of sin; lies, cheating, idolatry, injustice, adultery, fornication, sexual perversion, bribery, corruption, kidnapping, ritual killing, political assassination, robbery, materialism etc. Brethren, “the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions and to live sober, upright and godly lives in this world awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great god and savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity…” Titus 2:11-14.
Christ came to redeem us from sin. Just as the three wise men humbled themselves and sought for the new born King, will you humble yourself and acknowledge and allow Jesus to be born into life so as to become the King of your soul? God does not want any man to perish. You are great and precious in God’s sight. The precious state of man before God made Him to redeem man not with perishable things, but with precious blood of Jesus Christ 1Peter 1:18-19.
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it reminds us of His coming again. In Acts 1:11, we are constantly being reminded that “This Jesus, who was taken up into heaven will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven”. Jesus is coming to take those that have been redeem; washed in His blood. Jesus says; Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done” Rev. 22:12. Blessed are you then if you have been washed in the blood. If you have not, there is still an opportunity for you now; for now is time of salvation. Jesus is saying, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me” Rev. 3:20. Sinner, Jesus is at the door of heart knocking, accept Him into your life and have the greatest gift that this Christmas can offer you.
Let us pray
Now to Him who is able to strengthen you according to the gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages past, but is now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about obedience of faith- to the only wise, immortal, invisible God be glory for evermore. In the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit- Amen.
