SELLING YOUR COMPETENCE

SELLING YOUR COMPETENCE

Before you get hired or contracted to do any job, you need to prove that you are competent. Unless you are very popular, your competence may still be in doubt among those that wants to hire you. That’s why on Youth Mentor this week, I want to share with you how to sell your competence.

As a youth full of endowments, potentials and abilities, you may encounter people who will look down on you and therefore deny you the opportunity to do what you are capable of doing.

No doubt, it can be frustrating; especially when you are brimming with competence and willingness to work. At this point, you can either leave them or find people who have need for what you have to offer or effectively sell your competence to the people.

Many people will not hire you or give you the opportunity to do what you are capable of simply because they are not aware of or persuaded that you can do it. To such people, what you do is very simple; let them know beyond doubt that you are damn capable.

Demonstrate Your Expertise

The easiest way to sell your competence is to use any opportunity at your disposal to demonstrate your expertise and ability to deliver on your job or do any assignment you are given.

However, don’t wait until you get a platform to demonstrate your expertise and manifest your gifts. Whatever platform you have, put in your best in the discharge of your duty and do it very well. Someone may be watching and the result you produce will go wide to testify of your competence.

People may not recognise your competence on their first encounter with you. It’s your job to sell it to them. Words alone are not enough to make an effective sale. Demonstrate it in the execution of assignments given to you and allow testimonials for your work show.

Accept little pay for what you can do excellently; just to prove the point. It’s part of selling your competence. Once they buy it, you can settle down and negotiate your real pay.

Maintain Consistent Excellence

Understand your job description; learn how it is done and define your strategy for effective and efficient delivery. Maintain excellence consistently in the discharge of your duty until, those who look down on your abilities come to you and propose, ‘Do you mind working for us.’

Also, you can sell your expertise by showcasing what you have done in the past and testimonials from credible people. To an extent, it makes it easy for to showcase what you have done and can still do.

My point?

People may not recognise your competence on their first encounter with you. It’s your job to sell it to them. Words alone are not enough to make an effective sale. Demonstrate it in the execution of assignments given to you and allow testimonials for your work show.

May your day be super productive!
