PROFITING FROM ‘UNPROFITABLE CAREER’

Many careers are tagged unprofitable and so when parents and teachers advise their children and students on making career choice, they caution against any of those courses or career path. I was given such advice as a child but I have been growing, watching society, careers and learning how God designed life to function. From all these, I want to share with you how to profit from that career or course baptised ‘unprofitable’.

When I started writing on this, I realized that there are so many things to say on it. I guess it will take me at least three editions of Career Exploits to be done with this subject matter. So keep a date with me every Tuesday on Brojid.com.

When they Tag a Career Unprofitable

When people say a particular career or course of study is unprofitable, what they are actually saying is that based on their knowledge and experience, this career is not profitable. They are saying that as much as we know now and based on their prediction for the future, they can’t see profitability in that career or course of study.

It’s not a statement of fact that should guide your life or mine. It doesn’t mean they are correct; it means they have expressed their opinion!

I like you to understand that when people make strong statement like this, it doesn’t they mean they don’t mean well for you. They actually think they are telling you the frankest truth ever. Except that they are telling you the frank truth within the limit of their knowledge and understanding.

No Career is Truly Unprofitable

You know the truth?

No career or course of study is truly unprofitable! Yes; none is! The profitability of any career or course of study is not really dependent on  the course itself but the person taking the career direction. It depends on how they position themselves to profit from their career. I have seen people who are paupers even the career regarded as surety for wealth and immunity to lack.

Our career can be likened to the smart phones we have. While some use their to chat, take selfie and watch porn, many are busy making money with it. They use it for business and personal branding. My point? Profiting from your career is not about the career but about you and what you do with the career!

Just in case you don’t know, many people called successful in their career are pioneers in those careers. Until they came and took that career path, nobody advised his child or student to follow that career path. They blazed the trail and others are following.

Until Ali Baba made it big in comedy, comedians are called unserious and no parents wished their child becomes one. In fact, Ali Baba’s father rejected him when he stuck to his guns to follow the most promising career for himself. Now, everybody that can make his girlfriend laugh wants to become a comedian.

Footballers were unserious people until Kanu Nwanko and Jay Jay Okocha started raking millions playing football. Now, parents buy football for their k-leg son because they want them to make money like Mikel Obi.

Blogging was not a career until Linda Ikeji started making millions blogging. Every Tom Dick and Harry wants to blog including people who have nothing to offer in the blog sphere.

Until the likes of Ty Bello came on the scene, photography was not the big thing.

Now, anybody who can cram Keneth Haggin book and speak Christianese is now called into ministry because they want to ride private jet. Before Achibisop Idahosa who taught the church of God in Nigeria the gospel of abundance, preachers are synonymous to poverty. Many people won’t even want to give their daughter in marriage to a preacher.

But for lack of space, I can go on and on with career once labelled unprofitable but has become a hot cake. But whatever career path you have chosen, based on understanding of what God designed you for, stay on it. Stick with it. Resolve to profit maximally from it. If you position yourself well for career profiting and maximise the channels, it can be as profitable as any course or career.

My dear, God has loaded a solution to mankind in you. Your career is simply a platform to release that solution; not an avenue to make money, get prestige and satisfy the ego of your parents. Wealth is the default consequence of choosing and following fully the right career. Don’t be lured away from your true career by caring parents, concerned teachers and myopic academic advisers. I am not saying that they don’t mean well for you; the problem is that they mean well but are guiding you to a path that won’t wake your existence on the earth well.

I actually want to show you how to profit from unprofitable career but I have dwelt more on this matter of helping you understand that no career is truly unprofitable.
