MY SISTER: MAKING YOUR HAIR OR HEAD?

MY SISTER: MAKING YOUR HAIR OR HEAD?

In the course of our last discussion, you told me about your plan to make the new hairdo when you remove the one you are currently carrying. I don’t see anything wrong with it. I think it’s cool to do that. But I became worried when you said you will make the one you like even if it lasts one week instead making the one that will last.  I also find worrisome the fact that in recent times you place a lot of emphasis on hairdo. So, before you go on with your hairdo plans, I like to give you some pieces of advice.

I love beauty. After all, it’s God’s creation. In fact, don’t mind those Christians who make it appear as if beauty or good look is antichrist. I am sure God likes beauty not just in His creation, but also in our attire. Have you forgotten that in describing Aron’s regalia, He emphasized that it’s should be for beauty and glory?  My point? Beauty is good and God approves of it. It’s not worldly looking good!

However, in the use of our time, money and energy, we must not forget the principle of scale of preference we learnt in secondary school Economics. Considering the fact that at this your formative phase of life, the primary focus should be on developing yourself, is making trendy hairdo is economically wise? Do you think it’s worthwhile to give it the amount of attention you currently give it? Is it not better that you cut down on the resources you channel to it and utilize it in more profitable ventures, even if it profits another person?

By the way, how come this has suddenly become your priority? How come you give more attention to your hair and external beauty than more important matters – learning, skill acquisition, character development and pursuit of the God? My sister, who has deceived you? Your roommates? The so called celebrities? Please wake up! Walk out from that deception and retrace your steps. Disdain the hype on external beauty!

[Tweet “the influential women in our world did not rise to the level of influence because of their physique but the quality of their personality.”]

Wait a minute. Have you forgotten that Bishop David Oyedepo taught us that life is in phases and every man must occupy his phase per time? Don’t tell me that you

looking good is good. However, you should place your priority on what matters most in your becoming that great woman you are created to be. First seek the making of your head – in depth and wide learning – in the end you will have the resources to make your hair while being useful to your generation.

have suddenly forgotten that Pastor Bankie taught us that we are to occupy the different phases of our lives with contentment – living within our means while believing God for the change of our phase. This is the wrong phase of life to place a lot of emphasis on your hairstyle. Don’t mind the lie that it attracts suitors to you. At best, it will attract jokers to you.

My sister, making trendy or expensive hair is not a bad idea. I just don’t want you to eat your seed. The resources you have now are seeds and should be sown into the sand of time. Please for now, make your HEAD not your HAIR. I have told you time and again that the influential women in our world did not rise to the level of influence because of their physique but the quality of their personality.

Listen, Olusegun Obasanjo did not hire Oby Ezekwesili, Dora Akunyili and Ngozi Okonjo Iwela because of her hairdo. These influential women were hired and respected, home and abroad, for the content of their HEAD and strength of character not their hairdo.

You know want? I want you to be even more influential than these women. You cannot afford to copy actresses and singers. A majority of them live fake lives and do all that they can to maintain ‘an image’.

As I summarize this letter, let me remind you that looking good is good. However, you should place your priority on what matters most in your becoming that great woman you are created to be. First seek the making of your head – in depth and wide learning – in the end you will have the resources to make your hair while being useful to your generation.
